The Xcitement Doesn’t End: The 2015 BMW X4

It seems like BMW is trying to introduce as many new models this year as there are stars in the sky. Good thing we never get tired of new BMWs.

Today’s reveal is the 2015 BMW X4, a slantback car for rugged roads. They’re calling it a Sports Activity Coupe, the first of its kind. It has five doors and coupes usually have two, but it always sounds cooler when you can call something a coupe, right? Besides, they’re saying the silhouette is coupe-ish enough, so we’ll go with it. Car and Driver’s “fastback” designation also works.

If you remember the updated X3 we looked at a couple of weeks ago then you’ll recognize the X4 from the front. The grille and headlights layout looks identical with only some minor changes to the fascia to set the two apart. Side-on we see a different story. Three distinct character lines converge with the downward slope of the roof and end in a small spoiler built into the rear end. The X4 is shorter than the X3, but it sits higher off the ground than a standard sedan.

This new car shares its suspension with the X3 and rides standard on 18-inch wheels. It will feature all-wheel drive and Performance Control, a system that distributes torque effortlessly between wheels. As you might expect, BMW is touting this as a more agile alternative to the X3. You can read the Car and Driver article to see their predictions on available powertrains in our market, though it seems the most likely options will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder for 240 horsepower or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder for 300 horses.

Xenon HID headlights, LED fog lights, rear parking aid, and electric liftgate all come standard, setting the mark higher than the X4. The dashboard is said to look the same otherwise. This is shaping up to be the more expensive of the two new X-series cars, but it looks well worth it to us.
