The Boss on the Big Screen: Film Set Entirely in a BMW X5

Technology has done a lot to change the mediums in which we tell storytelling, but it’s also changed the very stories we tell. Who would have thought that an entire feature film could take place within the confines of one car and with only one occupant no less?

(Warning: Mild language)

Yet that is exactly what Locke proposes to do. In theaters at the end of April, Locke follows Tom Hardy – you would know him from movies like Inception, Rock’n’Rolla, and The Dark Knight Rises – through what appears to be a life-changing, life-challenging car ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The central drama of the movie revolves around a phone call that the main character receives and answers thanks to hands-free Bluetooth.

Hardy looks like he’s in top form, and the movie has already received immensely positive reviews from critics. We’re more interested in the car, though. Just what model is Tom Hardy’s co-star? “The Boss,” of course. Yes, while the roundel on the steering wheel in the trailer is unmistakably BMW, outside sources confirm that the movie was filmed in an X5.

At Leith BMW, we don’t know much about psychological thrillers, but we can tell you plenty about the 2014 BMW X5. The Sports Activity Vehicle features a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo I-6 engine that makes 300 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Transmission Control. It also has Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control, so drivers can speed by or swerve around any danger they might encounter. It’s also available with Surround View cameras, which we think would make for an interesting plot point if they used that in the movie.

Locke is in theaters April 25. Come visit our dealership if you’re interested in test-driving a BMW X5, drama-free.
